Mission Training Complete!

(Saying goodbye to Jim's parents for a while.)

send off party 036 - Copy

The last two weeks have been a most wonderful experience for us. Although we had to say goodbye to Pennsylvania family,(Brittney's family and Brian's family), including Jim's parents, we flew from PA on Nov 10th, then landed in Salt Lake City, drove to Boise, ID that same day, visited Brigham and Brielle's family on Tues. and Wed and by Wed PM were back in SLC preparing for our training.

(World Class Training Facility.)

279 We have had great training, and what has made it so is the unbelievable spirit that these people have about the gospel, about life and about helping their fellow man change their lives for the good. We truly felt as though we were in the city of Enoch while at the Missionary Training Center, since everyone seemed of one heart in their purpose, and that purpose was to bring souls to Christ. Whether by Proselyting, Humanitarian or Educational efforts...all were focused on making life better for those on this planet and it felt good, really good.

(The "here's where I'm going" board.)

280 There are 57 languages being taught here, the most of any educational facility in the world and of our group of "Senior Missionaries" we had folks going to Ireland, Whales, Tonga, Hawaii, Africa, Brazil, Cambodia, Finland, New Zealand, Australia and Mongolia.

(Jim and Reenie with Joseph and Alysin Boone.)

042 Our good friends Joseph and Alysin Boone, who we knew from their days at Dover Air Force Base, are in charge of this facility of 2,300 missionaries. Since Jim used to do a lot of music with Alysin in the old days, she asked if he would sing at the Sunday night fireside for an audience of a mere 2300. I agreed and rehearsed briefly with two outstanding young missionaries, Elder Scott Jackson (piano-going to Mexico) and Sister Michele Johnson (Cello-going to Belgium), both great musicians. Through this beautiful song, we were able to bring a great feeling to the meeting and many made known their appreciation afterwards. Here is a video link of the performance if you wish to view it: "Come, Thou Fount"

We are having Thanksgiving dinner with Brinns family today and will be joined again by Brielle's group for a day of visiting tomorrow, before we leave on Saturday morning. It is still a bit surreal to think that when we land on Monday morning we will be in a new home for 18 months and that home will be Africa.

Also a footnote...we were briefed by the church security people (one former foreign diplomat and one FBI) and they told us to avoid political discussions of any sort while in Africa, whether in a restaurant, on the phone or in emails. They advised us to just assume someone is listening or intercepting, whether it was the case or not, so we will be avoiding asking or expressing info of a political nature while we are away. Surely we will have much to catch up on when we return.

We love you all and will miss you during our brief sojourn, but we know more than ever that we will be very productive in helping those in the Africa Southeast area.

Just this new music on your blog is making me cry. To think...you 2 have been within spitting distance. :) I'm so glad you enjoyed the MTC. Though I've never served a mission I HAVE had some great experiences there. You 2 will be so amazing. You love the Lord, you love people, and you make them laugh and feel important. What else could you possibly need? Where oh where is the link to your song? I haven't heard you sing in ages...it would make me so truly happy right now. :)

It's true that this blog was wonderful! I had no idea that you had such a beautiful tenor voice, Elder VonStetten. I feel it a privilege and an honor to have introduced you to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Just make sure you use your music to "pass it on" to those who you touch in Africa. You two will be wonderful missionaries. I look forward to hearing from you in the future as you work hard.
Love ya - Shari Olson Couillard

I am so happy that you had such a magnificent experience at the MTC. Your song is amazing DAD. I listened to it at least 4 times today. I have also posted it on face book and have had many non member friends listen to it. It has opened the doors for discussing your mission and the gospel. And please tell Elder Jackson to wait for Ainsley!!!!!!

I love the music you put on your blog it reminds me of Sundays at home growing up and yes I still am crying right now! I hope you guys got there okay. We have been thinking about you lots. I am glad we were able to see you one last time in Utah. It was wonderful. You will be greatly missed but we look forward to hearing lots of wonderful experiences. Love you!

The music on your blog is beautiful. Your post was beautiful. Jim, your song was beautiful! The Spirit of God is beautiful. I am so grateful to be able to partake. Our family is so excited for your journey while in Africa, serving a mission. We will read your blog and watch your video for FHE tonight. I can't think of a better way to invite the Spirit into our home than through your Spirit.

We so look forward to your updates. And, Jim, I have a new to-do on my list for you....come visit and sing my children and I a good-nite lullaby. I always knew you loved music, and played music...but I don't remember ever hearing you sing. We love you and you and your family will be in our family prayers.

I agree with Brielle, that the music on the blog reminds me of Sundays growing up. We had a nice time together, didn't we??? I am so happy that you had a wonderful training experience, but I am sure that it won't even touch what you'll experience in Africa. I think about you often and wonder where you are and how you are doing. I am still pregnant... maybe tomorrow on Mom's b-day... :o) I love you both and look forward to hearing from you soon.

I can remember as a little one getting chills when you would sing. I love you. I am having an overwhelming amount of emotions right now. I just had the most amazing conversation with a friend of mine on the phone, then immediately heard your song. It's as if you were saying "Amy, it's true". You sealed it for me.

Gosh, I miss you two. You are just such incredible people, and I love you both so much. The people in Africa will be so blessed by your presence and the spirit you bring with you. I loved watching the performance -- it made me cry. How awesome that you were able to post it on here. I remember when you sang that in our ward, Jim. Thank you for sharing your talents wherever you go (and how talented those two young missionaries are, too!). Thank you for the wonderful example your setting for us. Mark and I hope to be in your shoes in 30 years. :o)

It is so good to hear about you. Are you settled in Africa yet? Do you have the Internet yet? We are mostly lost in Wales but absolutely adore the young people we will be working with. We taught Institute yesterday for the first time and have many things to do, including inspecting missionary flats. We have come to the library for Internet access but hope to have it in our flat by the 15th. Hope all is well with you and yours.

Wow, great song! (PEC isn't the same without you leading the hymns). You're place looks like a paradise, I'm so jealous. Leave some work for us to do when we get there in a few years. The ward misses you guys.
