Merry Christmas to you all!
This is an incedible land. For the next few moments we would like to share with you an experience we had yesterday at the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve located on 1400 acres within the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. It is a wonderful way to see nature up close, but in its own habitat. The new Olympus camera with the 18X optical zoom lens helped considerably. You drive slowly through the reserve, but DO NOT get out of your car. I repeat, you DO NOT get out of the car. You are permitted to open the windows of your vehicle 33%, but do so at your own risk. Folks have had tires chewed, bumpers knocked off by Rhino's and last year a Japanese tourist got out of his car for that "perfect shot" and was killed AND eaten by a pride of lions. We played by the rules and had a fantastic day. Please remember that if you want to see enlarged versions of any of the photos, just double click the picture and 'voila!'...big!
"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth...and God said let the earth bring forth the grasses...and God said let the earth bring forth the living creatures...and God made the beasts of the earth...and every living thing...and God saw that it was good..."
A handsome male Sable Antelope keeping a wary eye out. He stood up and was about six feet to his ears, but added another 24" with his horns.
This endangered species is called the Wild Dog. There are only about 4000 left in the world. These three are feasting on the carcass of what probably was a Springbuck. Their sound was nothing like the bark of a dog however, but more of a high pitched squeel and they had very much of the 'pack mentality'.
Here is a family of Gemsbock catching the cool shade of the Kraal Spike Thorn tree. They are strikingly beautiful and their horns grow up to 4 feet on both the male and female. I have bought 'biltong' at the market, which is like jerky from this animal, and it is very good.
Not much description needed here. A female Ostrich that has laid 15-20 eggs somewhere nearby, each weighing 3lbs and she can really run. You can't help but laugh when you see them take off running.
There are three prides of White Lions on the reserve. They are a very scarce type of lion, although not albino. They are the result of a recessive gene and have blue eyes. They are really a beautiful animal. Here they are tearing into an aged Rhino on the grassy plains of the Krugersdorp area in the Gauteng province of South Africa.
One of my favorite shots of the day. This is a female Cheetah, also quite endangered, and she is catching some shade during the mid day sun.
...and this is one of the juvenile males that is not putting out the welcome mat for us!
This is a shot of a female White Rhinoceros on the move. They have two prominant horns on their face and can weigh up to 2300kg (for you Americans, that's about 6000 lbs). They are very territorial and are not to be treated as big, fat and slow!
This, of course, is a pair of beautiful Hartmann Zebras. Comouflage is not their strength. They are concerned as well, as there were several of their young nearby, but even though they all have stripes, no two are ever exactly the same, so Mom can easily tell her own from the rest. (they could anyway)
This is also one of my favorites. In six hours of shooting 165 photos it's hard to pick one favorite picture since the animals were so plentiful and so very photogenic, however this magestic male Brown Lion was a real 'poser'. He got up from his laying down position, stood as though he were really "the king", gave me a wonderful 5 second side shot, and then he stared us down (see picture below) as if to say..... 'get going!'
Merry Christmas Reenie...
We'll gradually post more of the pictures we took at the game park, but for now we'll just say
Merry Christmas to all. We love you and miss you.

Dear Reenie and Jim, this is the first time in a while I was able to look at your website and was thrilled to see your African wildlife park photos! What great shots! The one of the savannah reminded me of Mexico. I had similar feelings of how the world may have looked when it was first created, and I always had a sense of being the first person in the wilderness, even though there have been many. A very Happy Christmas to you!
MJ
I felt like I was looking at National Geographic or something. Thank you so much for showing so many of your pictures. Sounds like a wonderful place to go and I really envy mom getting to play with the babies.
Merry Christmas to you as well. You are missed but we are very proud of what you are doing.
Thank you so much for the update. My kids are so touched to hear about the African people and want to send support to them for Christmas.
What a treat to be able to see your postings. The photos are out of this world. You do a great job, and I know it is not all the camera. I actually like the photo of the ostrich and it makes me laugh too. Your flat is darling though small. Your kitchen and ours are almost identical in size, with the microwave on top of the refrigerator. But your patio and yard are to die for. The carol singing here is amazing and they hold several gatherings to just sing carols. I knew the Welsh could sing, but it is something else to experience it. I hope you have a beautiful Christmas.
Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful experiences you are having! How grateful I am for modern technology!! The photos are amazing -- how awesome to be there! I love the creche and pray that you do have a wonderful Christmas in Africa. I miss you both!
These are such great pictures!! I have always wanted to visit Africa. Some of your pictures were really sharp Uncle Jim! and the little lions are so cute!! I bet Aunt Reenie was in heaven!
Wow, that was quite a ride! Emily and I almost feel like we just went on a safari. What an amazing experience. I would imagine that the next 1.5 years will be FILLED with them. Have a merry, warm Christmas. You 2 are amazing. :)
I agree, I thought I was looking at National Geographic pictures. What a wonderful experience..to see all of God's beautiful animals in their natural setting.I can't wait to hear about your missionary work. How very blessed we are to have the truth. I love you, dear friends.Somehow I feel closer to you now than i did when you were in Pa.
Hi Elder and Sister VS. These pictures are amazing! Kerin thought they were National Geographic. Especially with the amazingly detailed descriptions. You are both so blessed to be such an amazing place doing the work of the Lord! God Bless and Merry Christmas.
Those were amazing photos. I loved them. I would have loved to be in the backseat with you there!
Thank you for the sweet Christmas comment! I hope yours was merry and bright. Wish ours was warmer....as in weather. I did't know summer was just starting in South Africa!
Keep the posts coming. We are all soooo curious and anxious to continue to feel your sweet missionary spirit and hear of your work and experiences and travels!
Thank you, Jim, for sending the email. I now have the blog saved so I can view and write more often. It appears you are both having a wonderful time while doing such marvelous things for others, as usual. There truly is a special place for you in heaven. I do envy you, Reen. How fantastic it must have been to play with the cubs. You are sorely missed; but we are so proud of you for taking this opportunity. You are doing what many people need you to do, with no thoughts of yourselves. When I grow up, I want to be as brave as you and as loving and caring. You are the best in-laws a girl could ask for. I love you both dearly and am more proud of you than you can ever imagine. Oh, and Dewey sends his love, too. Take care and God bless. Keep up the awesome work.
Wow...what neat pictures! Love the one with Renie and the kitties. I'm sure that made your day, you are such a loving lady. Our prayers are with you both. Enjoy the moment...it too, will pass quickly I'm sure. I'm sure the people love you both as you are so easy to love. Thanks for all you do.....Rexanne
